There are three dimensions of perceived risk – perceived likelihood (the probability that one will be harmed by the hazard), perceived susceptibility (an individual’s constitutional vulnerability to a hazard), and perceived severity (the extent of harm a hazard would cause). Risk perceptions are central to many health behavior theories. The hazard perception test is the second part of the driving theory test set by the DVSA, first introduced in 2002. It is a computer-based test which measures a driver’s ability to recognise and react, in advance, to events developing on the pavement or road, thereby reducing the risk of having to take emergency action. What is a hazard in relation to the Hazard Perception Test? A hazard is described as anything that may cause a driver to change speed, direction, stop, or even cause harm. Hazards are normally grouped into categories such as: • Other road users (e.g. pedestrians, drivers, cyclists, horses) • Environmental (e.g. weather, road surfaces) Hazard identification is a part of risk assessment in which the hazards are identified for further investigation. Once the hazards are identified then proper measures can be taken to eliminate them by using engineering controls.
