There are three dimensions of perceived risk – perceived likelihood (the probability that one will be harmed by the hazard), perceived susceptibility (an individual’s constitutional vulnerability to a hazard), and perceived severity (the extent of harm a hazard would cause). Risk perceptions are central to many health behavior theories. The hazard perception test is the second part of the driving theory test set by the DVSA, first introduced in 2002. It is a computer-based test which measures a driver’s ability to recognise and react, in advance, to events developing on the pavement or road, thereby reducing the risk of having to take emergency action. What is a hazard in relation to the Hazard Perception Test? A hazard is described as anything that may cause a driver to change speed, direction, stop, or even cause harm. Hazards are normally grouped into categories such as: • Other road users (e.g. pedestrians, drivers, cyclists, horses) • Environmental (e.g. weather, road surfaces) Hazard identification is a part of risk assessment in which the hazards are identified for further investigation. Once the hazards are identified then proper measures can be taken to eliminate them by using engineering controls. Introduced in 2002, the hazard perception test aims to assess the students in the areas of anticipation, scanning and hazard recognition. It measures a person’s ability to spot and react to things happening either on the road or the footpath. There are many definitions for hazard but the most common definition when talking about workplace health and safety is: A hazard is any source of potential damage, harm or adverse health effects on something or someone. Basically, a hazard is the potential for harm or an adverse effect (for example, to people as health effects, to organizations Take our FREE online Hazard Perception Test using highly realistic hazard perception clips now - no registration needed A hazard is any object, situation, or behavior that has the potential to cause injury, ill health, or damage to property or the environment. Health and safety hazards exist in every workplace. Some are easily identified and corrected, while others are necessary risks of the job and must be managed in other ways (for instance, by using protective equipment). Hazard perception is a complex human cognitive skill which allows a person to identify a potentially hazardous situation. Well-developed hazard perception skills allow persons engaged in activities such as driving to identify hazards in time to take appropriate preventative action. Below is a video of the official Introduction to Hazard Perception video clip, together with an explanation of What to Expect in the actual Hazard Perception test: What is Hazard Perception? Simply put, hazard perception is the ability of drivers to spot potentially dangerous situations as soon as possible in order that they are able to adapt their driving as appropriate.
